have you ever noticed that a lot of images of shiva give him a chin that has a dimple or dent (aka the "butt chin"-sorry shiv-ji!) ? well, turns out that a chin like this indicates great strength and stamina (strong kidney jing and chi in Traditional Chinese Medicine). superman is also drawn with a chin such as this.
fun factoid or what?!

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 2:04 PMtoo bad Hollywood never got into the vedic mythology movie making...I could just picture Kirk Douglas in a 1950's version of Lord Shiva with fake dreds and that trademark cleft on his chin. -

Re: something fun about shivaji's chin
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 4:59 PMthe reason that the paintings of Lord Shiva and other deities have this "super Man" like appearance is because they used posters of famous Indian actors for reference material to do their art, no joke, thats all they had! -

Mon, April 21, 2008 - 7:18 PMEach IshtaDevata appears to the devotee in the form that will lead the mind to liberation through focus in Dharana
the images change through time and place to suit the devotees who focus upon them
sometimes from the inside out in revealed vision
sometimes from outside in due to social factors
The formless appears as form to lead us back to the formless -

Wed, May 14, 2008 - 6:04 PMyou are correct Arun, but most things found in the market place of India are made to sell and make a few rupees not for quality use, that is the intention of many artists there, my romantic visions of India were smashed when I went there in person.

Re: something fun about shivaji's chin
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 5:18 PMI think the romanticism of one's idea of India only gets destroyed if one has unrealistic expectations. like any place, it has it's pros and cons... I wouldn't have it any other way :)
